The structure of a Y2k engagement...

Here is a recent Keane (KEA) news release the describes a Y2k contract with Janus investments. The bold face emphasis is mine:

"With the recent successful completion of an inventory assessment and
enterprise plan for Janus, Keane will be developing a detailed strategic compliance plan to prepare Janus' enterprise information technology infrastructure for the new century. *****The engagement's major objectives are to manage vendor compliance for 221 vendor products, implement a testing infrastructure and develop the remediation plan for internally developed applications.***** Keane's Denver-based team is managing the project, applying its Productivity Management and Resolve 2000(R) methodologies throughout the effort.

MY COMMENT: Remediation of date code is simple, the hard part is vendor compliance. This KEA example comes from the IT/IS side of the problem, but this structure IMHO applies to the factory floor side as well. You have large sets of machines with embedded controllers spread across multiple plant sites but they may be linked to computers and machinery from vendors external to the company. Fixing the embedded controllers in a factory is not hard, it is the management of embedded chips and mainframe programs of the vendors who feed inputs into or accept outputs from the renovation site that is demanding. Note also the implied synergies. An outside vendor for the company you do factory floor compliance for is contacted, and you have an automatic lead for your sales people.
