Drove to D.C. yesterday with our daughter and her fiancé to see Jekyll and Hyde performed at the Kennedy Center (the tickets were a gift). My husband and I had already seen it four times over the years – twice on Broadway, and twice off-Broadway – and all four performances were excellent in their own ways.

This one starred a former finalist from American Idol and a very popular rhythm and blues singer. It was terrible. But the director attempted to make up for the performers’ lack of talent by using excessive special effects (which were not used at all in the four previous performances we had seen).

During the drive home, the four of us agreed that that particular performance was a microcosm of modern America. A story that once was a classic, and classically performed, has become a superficial, glaring piece of meaningless fluff. And the audience is now incapable of telling the difference between the two.

It’s on its way back to Broadway shortly, and I predict that it will be a smash hit. Audiences no longer know any better. Kinda like voters in modern American elections.
