Sorry I hadn't seen #163.

I see the vision of what you proposed (What an amazing box - I do confess missing some of the telco acronyms), and I don't disagree with it.

However, I think there's a more achieavable, medium term step that will be made where folks like USRX try to leverage their existing installed base of chassis to deploy ADSL as an incremental high-margin product. It will mean some architectural mods on their access hub, and certainly some performance limitations, but if achievable in the short term, It could priced to gain quick market share from ISPs seeking to roll out adsl fast.

Maybe USR's box isn't the one; what about ascend's or other's? I think the backplane speed will be the problem; feeding a few T1s into an Cisco 2000 series and out the back serial or ethernet is one thing, trying to handle a bunch of 1.5mb adsl circuits is a different matter altogether.

There's one basic question, which you may be able to answer: asnd and usr (I think) can both take channellized T1's, with a combination of pots and isdn and feed them into a single interface, with smart digital modems doing the right thing. What would the corresponding channelized solution be to carry asdl?

Basically, if the existing chassis vendors can manage to add xDSL incrementally to their line, it may not give the telco's the long-term product they want, but such solutions have a way of gaining momentem and enriching their maker so that the next product does get built.

Regards,

Rob
