I guess that makes them feel closer to their god in the stead of being with their god. But if you tell a Christian (who may be scoffing at these guys) that the same thing went on sometime in Christianity, they will respond "Not my sect!" - well not those exact words but that meaning. Are there other religions where self injury goes on (not including short lived cults) ? "Hey that cliff looks just like the one where our glorious god-founder jumped off and became as one with the holy bird! I've got an idea to be just like him!" <- that doesn't fly in more ways than one.
