I understand the regressive notion

But I think that the fairness of everybody paying the same rate on their income is sufficiently appealing to address the regressive notion

...and given the miniscule amount that wealthy earners now pay by legally mischaracterizing "income" as something else will go a long way toward establishing overall fairness

And mechanisms for those who truly can't afford to pay can be established, after the levy

The appeal of this approach is the simplicity, which I don't see how a VAT could be constructed so simply

We could eliminate the IRS, but a lot of lawyers and accountants might have to go back for retraining to acquire some constructive skills
