CHINA THREATENS THE USE OF FORCE AGAINST TAIWANDecember 2, 1997ÿA Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman today said that it hoped to resolve disputes with Taiwan peacefully but warned that military force remained an option to reunite the mainland with the island it considers a rebel province. This announcement comes three days after Taiwan's pro-independence opposition gained an overwhelming victory in local elections. The spokesman said, "We will work hard for the peaceful reunification of the motherland, but we will not renounce the use of force. This is by no means targeted against Taiwan compatriots but targeted against two forces: one is international forces meddling in China's internal affairs and the pro-independence forces' attempt to create Taiwan independence."
