Damn, things just keep going wrong.

I've got external speakers attached to my laptop. When I plug them in, the Windows system asks me if it's a line out or a headphone, I check line out.

But there is no sound out of the external speakers, and the sound is still coming out of the laptop's attached speaker system. Normally when I plug the wire into the "out" jack the laptop speakers stop making sound, and the sound comes from whatever is at the end of the wire (headphones or speakers). But not this time.

I've rebooted the machine, and the sound is still coming from the laptop rather than the external speakers.

Any suggestions?

Ah never mind. It seems the external speakers work fine when you push the wire all the way in.......
