The French telecoms giant Alcatel said the French and Spanish
national telecoms operator France Tlcom and Telefonica would test its
ADSL technology, which allows for the high-speed transmission of
digitised data over regular phone lines. Other companies that are
testing or commercially deploying Alcatel's ADSL include Ameritech,
Belgacom, Bell Canada, BellSouth, BT, Pacific Bell, Singapore
Telecom, SouthWestern Bell and Telia, thus giving Alcatel 30% of the
world's ADSL market. Pilot projects have also been ordered in
