Sorry for the confusion, but illegal immigration is by its nature relatively uncontrolled, right? I think simply calling people who flagrantly ignore the law as "undocumented" unnecessarily sanitizes a problem that is not being addressed head on. Neither party can address it out of fear of loss of some part of the electorate. This is not about race - it is about who gets to call themselves American and what mechanism we use to do that fairly. Reconquistas would have us believe that anyone anywhere south of the border can come north (never mind that no one from your valley in Michocan ever left until 1937). That is like me claiming an unlimited right to visit Ireland, France, Germany or England because I had relatives from there. Is it really my birthright to just wander the world and find the place that I like best? If so, I want it to be universal - I've got some places picked out.

IMO, the question is "What draws them?" I think it is employment and services. If the consequence of illegal employment was confiscation and fining of the hiring business then the illegal draw would go to zero. But contractors and restauranteurs would lobby against it, as has the food prep industry .

I'm 5th generation native born and have to produce substantial documentation to get a job or a bank account. My last company ran a complete background check with police and FBI files, not to mention what I consider an unconstitutional and irrelevant invasion of my person through a pre-employment drug testing program. I have to produce documents to drive. I have to carry insurance proof but probably won't have any if I'm illegal. I'd be jailed if driving without a license but, given the number of illegals, the jails would be bursting at the seams with JUST illegal drivers if we enforced that universally.

Schools can ask me to immunize my kids and produce proof. If the school suspects a child is of an illegal they go out of their way to not bring it up. Per the NSBA [link], "No federal law requires school districts to report undocumented students to immigration authorities and arguably school districts are prohibited from reporting them by Plyler." There is a web of laws that have been put in place to allow illegals to work and live quasi-legally within the system and all sorts of winks and nods. That really doesn't make sense. If they are guest workers - then let's call them that. Have a card that permits presence for employment purposes. This is equivalent to a SSID. When I went to the UK as a guest worker I had to swear not to use and services while there. It really wasn't enforced but it said so right on my papers.
