I've seen technologies that can monitor the use of appliances in real time simply by watching the energy usage signature from the metering box.


But what if you want it finer grained than that? Some of the smart grid concepts want to track each individual appliance.

Nope. You start getting latency and quality of service issues long before you reach saturation.

I guess if every household was downloading Netflix movies all at once ...


It wouldn't take that. After the first 18 months of operation, Netflix traffic had reached about 30% of the available bandwidth.
