There is an election mandate for a "balanced solution". There is no national mandate for bankruptcy.

I once took a seminar in "effective negotiations". It was one of the few seminars of many that was actually useful.

One of the tactics was to use shock to make a point. If you enter a negotiation with a reasonable position the other side will seek and expect a reasonable solution. If you enter with a shock position the other side may well expect, and be willing ,to settle for something far less than their original expectations.
It takes stones to be able to walk away from a bad deal.
