Leftwingers want to raise taxes. Nothing new about this.

The real question is why in hell would tax policy be in any way involved in these negotiations?

After you have spending cuts in hand, then it is fine to talk about raising taxes. To hold essential spending cuts hostage to a tax increase is just a bad idea from the outset.
