Symantic should be OK but you should make sure the virus database is up to date before performing a complete scan. There should be an update button.

It would also be best to have an alternative access to the internet if things lock up or a virus is detected and you want to find out what to do next.

Incidently, if you are unhappy with Symantic for any reason, both Microsoft Essentials and Avast are free, and mentioned on this board several times as being good products.

windows.microsoft.com

avast.com

You would only use one of these AV programs and have it operating continuously along with a firewall. A malware detector like Malwarebytes can also be used along side the firewall and your AV program.

Symantic, M/E and Avast can scan your PC for viruses. A complete scan would be necessary.

I normally us M/E but I use Avast for my netbook and the mobile version for my android smartphone. I find both these programs as excellent products and have minimal interference on my machines performance, while protecting my PC continuously.
