Steve, re: "You push a mad dog into a corner and he will do some strange unexpected shit."

Yes, fine, let them do something strange and unexpected out of desperation, pettiness or stupidity. If those are their true colors then it's better to flush them out and cure the disease than it is to try to alleviate the symptoms by accommodating their unreasonable demands.

I understand your concern that their bull in a china shop tactics have served them well in the past but this isn't 2009. The Democrats have found their voice, asserted leadership, articulated positions that average Americans can identify with and proven the vacuity of much of the bumper sticker bullshit that the Republicans were selling so successfully.

With their advantage on issues such as wage stagnation, tax preferences for the wealthy and the lie of trickle down economics fresh in the minds of voters, Obama and his supporters have a leg up on debunking the screaming and the crocodile tears of the far right if they try to justify "strange and unexpected" actions that create uncertainty.

The were wrong the last time around (barely) thinking that they could derail Obama by denying the country a better chance at a recovery and this time they will start out with two strikes against them. That's apparent in the polling which tells us that most of the country will blame the Republicans if there is no agreement on the "cliff".

And, as I've stated, the fears of the cliff are overstated. Take a look at the movement of the stock exchanges and you'll see no real oscillations based on some kind of economic Armageddon. Ed
