I began experimenting with Windows 8 driven by curiosity. The question I needed answered was "Can I make this work?" I found my answer: No.

The missing Start Menu was a big obstacle, but not insurmountable because quite a few third-party replacements are available. I've tried many. None are perfect for me. But they're improving almost daily.

For me, the Show-Stopper was Windows 8 needing a CPU (and BIOS) supporting PAE, NX, and SSE2.

My experimenting will end when my Preview versions of Windows 8 expires.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. The Start Menu issue has motivated me to reflect on how I use Windows 7.

I find the Out-Of-Box from Microsoft organization of the Start Menu a disaster. It seems like no matter what I want, it's in some obscure counter-intuitive location. Some time ago, I tried a different approach: I gathered all the shortcuts on my system into one folder. Then I placed a shortcut to this folder on my desktop. Now, one click makes all my system's shortcuts available. I soon observed that it's quite a bit faster to scroll through a list of about a hundred shortcuts than it is to guess locations or use search.

Bottom line: I rarely use the Start Menu on Windows 7.

Quick quiz. . .

Without looking, which Start Menu folder contains:
Create Recovery Disk
Easy Transfer Reports
Fax & Scan
Narrator
RegEdit
Shape Collector
Tablet Input

Any correct answers deserves a Gold Star!

P.P.S. I was being sneaky. Windows doesn't come with a shortcut for RegEdit.
