Labels are important for all of the same reasons any language develops.

It is critical to the communication process that when a person makes a sound with his mouth, everyone that hears that sound receives the same understanding intended by the creator of the sound.

When someone indicates they are a day trader, they are indicating that they are not concerned about the companies long, intermediate or even short term prospects. They are only interested in the action that is occurring on that day. (Very short term)

A position trader is attempting to take advantage of short term swings in the price of the stock in the company. They must pay much more attention to the actual fundamental values of the company underlying the stock to avoid unpleasant surprises. To hold overnight without this information is equivalent to diving off a cliff into unknown seas. It can be argued that "most" of the time it will be OK. But one rock takes you out of the game.

Categories and labels have their place. They foster efficient communications, IMHO. (In My Humble Opinion, for those that don't like shortcuts to understanding.)

Enjoy the ride.
