The GOP has courted fundamentalists continually whose view of their own religious beliefs is that they should be imposed on everyone else . To maintain these uncompromising zealots as allies, they in turn found themselves forced into doing their bidding which was to try to enact laws that impose fundamentalist christian beliefs on everyone else. The world is changing , modernity is a fact, the old gives way to new attitudes & definitions and it is demonstrated that not only gays can be long term caring partners in commited couple relationships but also caring commited parents too.
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all arose when the world was still relatively underpopulated and childhood mortality was quite high. Ascending religions accommodate and sanctify social values until they become so powerful that they can dictate them. These three "great" religions sanctified sexual relations that would produce children in supportive families, while condemning all other modes of sexual relations or marriage. But perhaps we live in
Of course an established religion can never say it was wrong about a previously sanctified position, doing so is tantamount to admitting that it isn't or wasn't uttering the pure word of its deity or worse that its deity can be wrong or fickle. To fundamentalists, marriage equality is about far more than love and/or sex, it's about their ability to maintain the aura, to continue to convince themselves, that their religious beliefs are not mere personal beliefs, but the only true and universally valid beliefs about the world and all existence.
