The sad irony is that most misuse of firearms affects gun owners and their families, not innocent bystanders, unlike drunk driving.

It's comparable to poor whites voting against their economic interest. They have decided that a different set of principles govern this issue, so actual outcomes with evidence contradicting their "moral" stance are always discounted.

And the lethal game goes on.

I first handled a weapon at 15 or 16 (which I still own) and I vividly remember being taught the primary safety steps. I wouldn't handle one without checking the chamber first but I have seen plenty of others do it, either because they didn't know or didn't care.
