I put money in a retirement account, my boss puts in a bit, and it percolates, minus management fees to somebody for about 40 years. Then I start getting checks.
I put money into SS, my boss puts in the same, and it percolates for about 40 years under the for-free watchful eyes of the SSA. Then I start getting checks.

There is no difference.

Same with health insurance. My boss and I both paid for it (altho, IIRC, sometimes I didn't need to contribute), and we've both spent my career paying my MC health insurance forward. They don't pay anymore, but I'll be paying the rest of my life.

The only real difference is that, with SS and MC, the private sector doesn't get to make a profit on my contributions.

"The beauty of such schemes is that they are there for people who really need them"

The real beauty is that we made them save for their old age, whether they liked it or not.
