Brian, NY Times recommends $999 IBM Aptiva E16 featuring IBM (AMD) K6-166. They compared the unit to $999 offerings from Compaq and HP ...but the new Aptiva E16 from the International Business Machines Corporation is a $999 unit that does almost everything right and has plenty of room to grow. The E16 will be available only in Officemax stores until early next year, but I.B.M's competitors clearly have some catching up to do... The E16 also comes with 256 KB fo Level II cache...the $999 HP Pavilion 3100 has a skimpy cache of just 32 KB, the $999 Compaq Presario 4500 has none at all but lets you add 512 KB of it for about $80. In my tests the Aptiva outperformed the Pavilion and even an upgraded Presario... The Aptiva offers great expandability,... The Presario is a stubby minitower with much less expansion potential... The Pavillion;s small flat desktop case has just one slot free with restrictions on what you can put there... The Aptiva's CDROM player is slightly faster than the others..., it was able to read a slightly defective CDROM disk that made the others gag... The Aptiva comes with a so-called "56K" modem [others are 33.6]... The Aptiva gives you 2 MB of video memory instead of a mere 1 in the others...the video circuitry built into the Aptiva can work at higher refresh rates to minimize screen flicker... I.B.M.'s powered speakers can play fairly loudly without great distortion. The HP audio suffers from competition from a fan so loud it vibrated my desktop. Compaq's inferior speakers... Compaq and HP toss in Works software and last year's encyclopedia. IBM skips the encyclopedia and provides a copy of its office-strength Smartsuite 97.
