Former computer worker
at Forbes accused of doing
$100,000 in sabotage
NEW YORK - A temporary-staff computer technician has been charged with breaking into the computer system of Forbes Inc., the publisher of Forbes magazine, and causing a computer crash that cost the company more than $100,000.
In April, according to a complaint filed in federal court in New York, George Mario Parente, whom Forbes had fired, erased data from Forbes' internal network, causing five of the company's eight file servers to crash.
The sabotage left hundreds of Forbes employees unable to perform server-related functions for a full day and caused many employees to lose a day's worth of data, the complaint said.
A Forbes spokeswoman confirmed that "an act of technological sabotage" had occurred at the company shortly after Mr. Parente was fired. Forbes then contacted the FBI, whose investigation led to Mr. Parente's arrest, the spokeswoman said. She referred further questions to the U.S. Attorney's office in New York.
Mr. Parente was arraigned Monday afternoon and released pending the posting of a $50,000 personal recognizance bond. He declined to comment on the allegations.
If convicted, Mr. Parente, 30, of Queens, N.Y., faces up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
