>>actually outside of a rep from a competing company claiming this, where do you get this "free port theory" from?

I believe it's from comments made in their own press releases, stating that some purchases of new TNT chassis would received free modem cards when the became available. They would not have been able to sell them otherwise. Also, it's no secret that they have an aggressive trade-in program for the new cards. It's the only way their ISP customers were able to compete with the free software that their Total Control based ISP counterparts were receiving. They didn't have to buy any new ports to get 56k.

Of course, some held to the belief that there were adequate reserves, but recent events would tend to raise doubt about their adequacy, and your comment "they have a reputable outside cfo for a reason."

All that aside, it would appear that the news today from CS and 3Com, along with the already released news from Ascend, foretell trying times in the networking sector for the next couple of quarters.
