Actually I had 200 shares sold 100 at 38 and 100 at 40; was feeling pretty good. Then I bought 100 Xilnx back at 34.25 today and also bought 100 3COM at 34.88. Great timing on Xilinx; horrible timing on 3COM as they announced after market closed they would be way under estimate for this quarter around .09 instead of .45. I expect it to open around 30 tommorrow. Might be a good stock to keep your eye on;
looks like their going to bite the bullet this quarter on excess inventory of 28.8K amd 56K modems. Next year should be better after 56K standard is set and cable modem sales come on stream. There was a nice article on page 15 in the December 1st issue of Baron's on 3COM and the future of cable modems.
Altera said earnings would be flat next quarter dropped 11 points and basically pulled the whole group down with it including Xilinx.
I have my TV on CNNfn while I'm typing this message and they were interviewing Robert Chaplinsky chip analyst with Hambrecht & Quist and he said that while Altera's sales were flat Xilinx reported a slight uptick in sales for November. That may have contributed to the $6 gain yesterday and Altera caused the $6.50 drop today. This sounds positive for Xilinx and hopefully they will make their numbers for this quarter.
My main strategy with XLNX has been to sell half of my stock as it gets close to 38 and then try to buy it back around 34. Yesterday I deviated becase I couldn't find any news to justify the $6 gain and decided to sell it all; luckily I got to buy back some today but the money I made on Xilinx will be lost on 3COM tomorrow. One thing is for certain this ain't no boring stock!
