HP Tools to include McAfee software

12/02/97 - HP TopTools Continues to Define the
Future of Standards-Based Desktop Manageability

PALO ALTO, CALIF. (Dec. 2) BUSINESS WIRE
New TopTools Management Capabilities Combined
with Growing Third-party Support to Shrink Costs and Ease
Administration of HP Vectra PCs and Kayak PC Workstations
Continually breaking new ground in PC management,
Hewlett-Packard Company today announced the
latest advances in its award-winning, standards-based
HP TopTools desktop management software. The
enhanced HP TopTools makes its debut with the
new HP Vectra VE PC, also being launched today.

HP brings new crash protection and remote
virus-alert capabilities to its powerful DMI-based
TopTools application, maximizing user uptime and
enhancing network security. HP TopTools" new
capabilities monitor memory, hard-disk-drive
capacity, disk defragmentation and other system
resources, issuing remote alerts to MIS if resource
use reaches critical levels. If an application crash does
occur, TopTools can revive the application and
restore data.

The new HP TopTools features also enhance the
manageability of HP Vectra PCs and Kayak PC
Workstations with a new remote virus alert from
McAfee. Should a PC become infected, TopTools
will issue an alert to the management console,
allowing network administrators to neutralize the
virus before it spreads, protecting end users against
data loss and networkwide virus infection.

Building on the powerful desktop-management
capabilities of HP TopTools and HP Vectra PCs,
Kayak PC Workstations and OmniBook notebook
PCs, HP continues to reduce the cost and complexity
of deploying networked PCs in a heterogeneous
environment by working with such leading industry
vendors as the following:

-- Computer Associates -- The integration of
TopTools with CA"s Unicenter TNG Framework
improves the centralized management and control of
networked PCs. This integration enables IT managers
to upgrade the BIOS of multiple PCs with a single
operation, administer desktop security policies, and
view data on inventory and hardware configurations
centrally. In addition, TopTools, combined with
CA"s Enterprise/CSi (Configuration Standardization
Initiative), enables customers to perform critical
desktop operations after-hours, even when PCs are
powered off; -- HP and Microsoft(R) -- HP
TopTools integrates seamlessly with leading
management platforms, such as HP OpenView and
Microsoft SMS, providing customers with maximum
choice and investment protection. Within the
OpenView family, TopTools integrates tightly with
HP OpenView Network Node Manager for Windows
NT(R). -- Intel, 3Com, IBM, Madge -- HP TopTools
can now remotely retrieve DMI-based information
from Intel and 3Com network adapters, giving
customers management capabilities within the
networking hardware platform of their choice. In
addition, through the HP Vectra LAN-card-ready
program, drivers from vendors such as Intel and
3Com, IBM and Madge are preloaded on Vectra
PCs, easing the complexity of PC setup and
deployment; -- McAfee -- HP is working with
McAfee, a leading worldwide vendor of
network-security and management solutions, to add
new crash-protection and virus-alert capabilities to
HP"s powerful DMI-based TopTools application.
For
example, McAfee Virus Scan can now issue a remote
DMI-based alert to the TopTools management
console, allowing network administrators to neutralize
potential virus outbreaks immediately.

HP TopTools, HP Vectra PCs and HP Kayak PC
Workstations and OmniBook notebook PCs are fully
compliant with DMI 2.0 specifications. HP TopTools
can remotely manage PCs from both HP and other
vendors based on either DMI 1.x or 2.0 standards,
providing customers with the latest advancements in
standards-based desktop management features while
protecting customer investments made in
industry-standard hardware and software technology.
The new HP TopTools is scheduled to be available in
the first half of January 1998. HP TopTools is
preloaded for free on every HP Vectra commercial
PC and HP Kayak PC Workstation and is available
for download via the World Wide Web at
hp.com.
