Oh, consider the ability to hit a target the size of your desk top with a drill bit that is 10,000 feet down and up to six miles away from the drill site. All the big oil companies have multiple research subsidiaries - Shell Research and Technology, Exxon Research and Engineering, Exxon Production Research and spend hundreds of millions a year on both upstream and downstream technology development.
