More SDLI products...

===================================================================
SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- SDL, Inc. (NASDAQ:SDLI) has
started production of a new high power 1550 nm distributed feedback laser
diode for use in high capacity, long haul communication links. These links
demand lasers with very high power and reliability to transport voice, data
and video services between regional distribution facilities. SDL's new laser
will deliver optical power in excess of 30 mW combined with excellent noise
performance. The new laser is designed for use with external modulators in
cable television and telephony networks. In many of these networks, high
optical power and low optical loss in the fiber combine to dramatically reduce
the cost per subscriber. Low noise performance from the laser is required for
low signal distortion when transmitting video signals across long distances.
High power 1550 nm transmission systems continue to maintain a clear cost
and performance advantage in broadband distribution networks because of the
low optical loss of fibers and the widespread use of optical amplifiers in
this wavelength range. According to Gregory P. Doughtery, Vice President of
Communications and Information Products, "The introduction of this product
leverages SDL's strong market position in 980 nm pump lasers, since both
products are key elements in transmitters based on erbium doped fiber
amplifiers. It also marks SDL's first of many planned source laser offerings.
We will continue to build off of our competencies in high power devices and
stable packaging."
SDL has completed preliminary reliability qualification and is currently
delivering evaluation units to key OEM customers.
