Where I grew up that was typical. We knew not to shoot at other people and had a good realization that if you acted like an idiot someone could get killed. I knew of people who got killed in hunting and/or gun accidents when they got older and alcohol was all over the place. If 8 year olds are walking around with rifles, I'd be concerned. But by the time most kids are 12 or 13, most are able to comprehend and respect the responsibility, IMO.
