The default they call "fiscal cliff", basically, implies that taxes will increase and there will be cuts - but relatively mild ones, and mostly from the military. So, I have a hard time understanding why would Obama ever try to avoid it. He has a built in victory. And the Congress failing to get anything done will simply give the Prez a better reason to blame the Republicans, for any hardships or bad feeling. Edit -- in other words, because they made a stupid original deal, now the Republican side is under far more pressure.

...yeah, futures reacted strongly. The DOW was down 245 a few minutes ago, now it's moderating a bit.
