I've spent a lot of time thinking about the stupidity of the gun nut's fantasies with regard to school "safety". I am at a large high school. We have an officer on our campus. He has his own office. He's there all the time. He's armed. But our campus is huge. He's one guy. We could have literally 100's of kids shot, at lunch, for example before our one little guy could get to anyone to help them, or before he could get to a shooter. I realize the wet dream of the right is that everyone would be armed- babies in their strollers, moms and tots, everyone in the workplace. But that's not going to happen and an armed officer isn't really going to be the answer. To those nuts who want to commit suicide by cop, after killing a bunch of other people, it's just going to be an added reward.

Having someone with a gun face you is only a deterrent if you DO NOT WANT TO DIE. Many of these shooters want to die. They are suicidal, but they don't want to go alone. I wish the wingnut gun dickheads could figure that one out- but apparently they can't. There ARE attacks on police, and on other people with weapons. It's not like the true mass shooter cares very much about that. Criminals who are in it as a business are rational- they are business people, after all- but those criminals are not the ones who commit mass shootings.

While in a lock down this week, with my students, one of the kids (whose dad is on a swat team) told me he thought they should all have guns. I said "I know what you think of your fellow students. Now imagine them all armed..." And he said "Oh, Yeah."

That officer on our campus? He is at least 1/4 mile from my classroom. We have a big campus, and I'm on one of the extreme ends. Luckily these events are rare.
