I'm assuming a lot of us here aren't computer poor, we can afford to try new toys and break things, which results in learning.

Ubuntu is the latest good version of Linux I've used over the years. It's based on Unix and it is windows in that the screens are similar, menus, click on icons, etc. You may have heard of Redhat, it is another flavor of Linux.

Just don't expect to load your microsoft based Windows programs.

It does come with zillions of programs, depending on what you need a computer for. The only thing I have found I need is pcanywhere for some remote tasks at work. Only reason I keep windows around.
