The (R)'s put together a coalition of gun nuts, racists, tax haters, bible-thumpers, military boosters and small government voters on behalf of their true funding base, the wealthy. In the past, the cast of clowns was kept in line with a bone tossed to their issue now and then. You could see who was important by looking at who was giving to the Romney campaign, 75% large buck donors, 25% small buck donors, almost the exact opposite of Obama's funders.
But NOW, the clowns have taken over the circus through the primary process, and you have to swear fealty to some truly wacky beliefs to even get elected Republican. The (R)'s are desperately trying to hold this group together instead of supporting more widely popular, sane positions, like taxing the wealthy. As a consequence their base is shrinking, as old white guys die off and saner (R)'s just bail out, mainly from the small government group and the wealthy.
They're long term doomed, but can still cause a lot of problems in their death throes. |
