My belief on the why ( forget the technicals for a minute) is the threat of higher personal taxes next year, capital gains may rise from about 141/2 % this year to near 46% next year. So we have people and institutions booking profits now.

Then there is the fiscal cliff. We have a president who insists on increasing tax rates and a republican congress who will never vote to increase anyone's tax rates so over the cliff we go. That uncertainty will cause a huge negative impact on our economy and an almost instant recession.
