I don't know about you, but I'd prefer my civilian life not include gunfights, which by law would be illegitimate

By law in nearly every jurisdiction in the country, one is permitted to use deadly force to prevent imminent risk of life or serious bodily harm to oneself or others. It's called self-defense, something you seem oddly opposed to.
