There is no red herring here. If you truly believe the tax rate is not high enough then you have a moral imperative to pay the rate you believe others should pay. At the end of the form there are line describing overpayment, amount you want refunded and amount to apply to future years. If you had an amount on the overpayment line and inserted zeros in the next two lines and send a note along with your form that you desired to have your overpayment go to reduce the debt (actually reduce borrowings) I am confident that your wishes would be honored over 90% of the time.

Anyone who complains they are not paying enough taxes can eliminate hypocrisy by doing this.

I know enough about the tax code that I don't have to grasp straws. I simply am pointing out a glaring hypocrisy. Ask your tax preparer how often clients make voluntary overpayments. A competent tax preparer should be able to increase the probability of the IRS keeping your additional money closer to 100%.

I agree with you that the eco-types that fail to live by the standards they claim everyone else should live by are hypocrites. If you want no petrochemicals then you should avoid any transportation that involves them. People like Algore who fly in energy wasting private jets to preach a different life style than they live are the lowest form of hypocrite.

Have a safe and Happy New Year. Thanks for the Christmas Greeting.
