Wash sales on options - I am considering declaring Professional Trader status to avoid conflict with wash sales rules. I trade options with IB and my understanding is that they will not provide option trades data until 2013 so reporting wash sales are voluntary at this point.

Many of the traders I exchange trading info on did not religiously follow the wash-sale rules with regard to options (vs e.g. stocks) since the wash sale rules for options are clearly complex and hard to figure out what were the correct options trading moves to become fully compliant viz not trading options over the whole month of December. Can you or anyone else on this board comment on what approaches they take for observing wash-sales rules with regard to options? The rules for Stocks are relatively clear but not so much for options, in my opinion.

TIA
