My father was a hard core alcoholic.

Sure there are problems, but they are mostly solvable. I doubt it is much tougher today then it was when I was a kid. We could not have night football games there were so many fights. My nose is still crooked-lol.

Few are so poorly nourished their intelligence is affected, but to the degree that is true, all the more reason to provide free pre school with a hot breakfast for the kids, and hot school lunch as well!

There is the solution to that problem. And if it is as bad as you say we better get to it!

I don't know why people find it so hard to believe most people can and do benefit from education?

<<Was your "parent" a crack whore? Were you so poorly nourished your intelligence was affected? Were you physically abused as a child, or neglected? Did you live in an area where you never saw working adults?

There are children in our inner cities putatively "raising" children- though I can't say I think that term really applies.

There are certainly ways to help the children there, but they aren't the ways that helped you (50 years ago, was it, that you grew up there?)>>
