If by "us" you mean your circle of close friends and acquaintances from high school - then I would agree but shout "selection bias!!!!". The average person from Richmond, is probably still there or in a similar neighborhood somewhere close by. From my high school - in an affluent suburb, almost nobody rose up to any high level and those that did, I knew. Almost everyone else , especially the bullies, are strangely (or perhaps "not so strangely") absent from the Internet.

My mother starts talking about "none of my friends" or "all of my neighbors" - it's like "Really? Down at the country club they don't have this problem?" She isn't that wealthy IMO but relative to the working stiffs that don't live in the exclusive retirement community where you have to buy in with considerable cash, her problems are small and parochial. She doesn't see the people of Wal-mart so what she considers "normal" is biased toward upper middle class.

People always assume that they, their family and their circle of friends are "average". That is almost never the case because people gravitate towards those that are like themselves. The fact that you post here already puts you in the upper 15 to 20% of people in the US. While most people have Internet, few post much outside Facebook or other social networking sites. And an even smaller portion consider and write thoughts about anything substantive. Count the number of discrete posters and you will see how small a community this really is.
