You totally missed the crux of the issue.

The bad guys have the assault weapons - most of the good guys don't. Who's going to protect us when the police are overwhelmed. Do you think the bad guys are going to stop acquiring assault weapons? Who's going to protect us against them? Your pistol?

Just think how much better it would have been if assault weapons hadn't been available to that "scum".
