"No -- lets have responsible gun control -- it is not rocket science -- just plain common sense."

Not really. The gun violence is committed disproportionately by men in their teens and early twenties, so the common sense solution would be "Let's keep all guns out of the hands of men in their teens and early twenties."

Instead everyone is fixated on particular types of guns rather than on who possesses the gun. In the hands of a 60 year old woman, a Bushmaster AR-15 is perfectly safe, in the hands of a 22 year old male, no gun is safe.

So what we are going to do is have a big argument over which guns should be banned and which shouldn't, and that argument will be led by people who don't know much about guns, and in the end it will resolve nothing because the problem is not 60 year old women who own a Bushmaster, the problem is young males who get their hands on any type of gun at all.
