Maybe you should be asking why your "engineer" friend continue to use AOL with all its hassels? Why does he not change to a more friendly ISP? And if your "engineer" friend won't change, what would compel so many less computer literate people to change to an ISP which is essentially an unknown to them including all the hassels of changing the email address, etc.
