There are at least a few major problems for gasification in the US that I can see:

- plenty of space for landfills means low tipping fees
- cheap, abundant (and getting even more abundant) natural gas
- "Not In My Back Yard" mentality

There have been a couple of attempts to put a PG plant in Massachusetts but both of them ran into a brick wall of organized citizens. I spent some time recently looking at a local PG company that appears to be defunct. They raised over $50MM in venture capital over four years and then fizzled, partly because of the determination of the local citizenry to torpedo the project, which they did. Alter is focusing their efforts in the markets that are amenable to the technology, thankfully!
