Over 100 advanced gasification plants need to be built in the UK by 2030 if Europe is to deliver on its renewable energy targets, according to latest research.

A study by waste-to-energy specialist CHO Power claims that the UK needs to house 107 of these treatment facilities, which would represent over 16% of the renewable electricity market across Europe. Across Europe 650 gasification plants need to be built within the same timeframe, the report argues, which would amount to around 6,500 MWe in total.

But it is in the UK that strong growth is predicted for this sector, which is increasingly being viewed as an attractive market for the generation of electricity from waste and biomass since the Government issued clarity over renewables obligation support for gasification technology.
