“Modern scholars have tended to accept without question or doubt the assertions of ancient pederasts that their activities were beneficial to boys, that they were educating boys in the habits and ways of manhood and of citizenship.”

“A man could follow his eros wherever it led him. Sex was not as "gendered" as it is in our society, and a man could easily switch back and forth between females and males, as long as his partners were inferiors. The married man was not expected to confine himself to his wife, but could continue the full range of his sexual activities just as he had done before marriage.”
“According to Pausanias' speech in the Symposium, in Ellis and Boeotia "the universal sentiment is simply in favor of these connections, and no one, whether young or old, has anything to say to their discredit."(8) "But in Ionia and other places, and generally in countries that are subject to the barbarians," pederasty is held in "evil repute.”

“As he grew toward adulthood he was expected to flip to an active role, first with younger boys and eventually with women. Some males had difficulty making such a change, and if they persisted in sexually passive ways they were once again subject to deep humiliation and shame.”

K. J. Dover first effectively elucidated the basic outline of Greek male sexual relationships in 1978, in his groundbreaking and authoritative work, Greek Homosexuality.(2) As a highly respected classicist a heterosexual, Dover gave to the study of Greek sexuality both respectability and a thoroughly scholarly approach…”
“Dover writes, "I am fortunate in not experiencing moral shock or disgust at any genital act whatsoever, provided that it is welcome and agreeable to all the participants."

AUTHORITATIVE
“Substantiated or supported by documentary evidence and accepted by most authorities in a field: an authoritative edition of Shakespeare; an authoritative treatment of a subject.”
So the bottom line, little gregoree,--as you indulge in your histrionic agonising over people dead for 2500 years or so (-g-)--is BE HAPPY! Go get yourself a prostitute of either gender and get lost for a week! But in any event…GO!!! Everyone tires of your whining!
POINTS Made by Enid!
Professional photographer (Enid Bloch) analysed her emotional troubles by analysing Socrates and other great heroes of civilization--a task she has no qualifications to successfully conduct!!
Enid Bloch admits that ALL true scholars and ALL authoritative scholars see ancient Greek pederasty as a cultural phenomenon considered by the people who lived it (“both young and old”) to be not only moral…but uplifting!
She admits that only in places considered “barbarian” was this practice criticised in any way!
Inasmuch as this professional photographer (who engaged in self-help therapy through Socrates is the ONLY person out of thousands of “AUTHORITATIVE” scholars (such as she confesses Dover to be)--Dover, who probably could not take a picture worth a damn!--it seems sensible to conclude that she simply has no erection here.
If there had been immorality associated with the ancient Greek forerunners of our modern morality and our civilization--surely we should have heard in the last 2500 years?!! ;-)
You are roasted like a turkey by your own professional photographer, Kiddo!! LOL!!
More about Enid.
Some beautiful photography in her home page!

Some quotes about her search for the roots of her emotional problems. Who do you think she is psychoanalysing here? Socrates or HERSELF??? And do you really really really want us to believe that her self-serving opinions here are healthy or sound???
LOL! Enid Bloch on Socrates and his (and her) psychiatric problems--LOL!
On Socrates and the Greeks:
“…here was an argumentative, annoying, ugly little man” “As long as I could remember I had yearned for a baby, and now Plato, through the voice of Socrates, intended to rob me of my future child? And beyond that, to censor my every thought and action in a totally controlled society?”
Enid Bloch--professional photographer
“I slowly realized that Socrates had started out life as a badly abused child”
Enid Bloch--professional photographer
And she goes on and on with her psychiatric analysis, in spite that she has no qualifications in either Greek history or psychiatry!
“If as a child he had taken money for his services, even if forced to do so by his father, and then in adulthood had dared to cast a vote in the assembly, knowing he had been turned into a woman, he could lose not only his citizenship but his very life.”
Enid Bloch--professional photographer
Any acceptance of “payment” for the love and guidance of the erestes would condemn the boy and his family to contempt and persecution for life!! So much for your bribery crap! Do yourself a favour; when you wish to explore any subject in the future...go to experts in the field! -g- Stay clear of “psycho-historians” and introspective sickos using self-help Freudian analysis to understand their emotional disorders!
“I do not think I ever could have recognized what Socrates was doing had I not experienced similar childhood miseries and found similar ways out. Fortunately I was not used for sex as a child, nor was I beaten, but some of the assaults on my emotions and my body were not so very different, and I too fled to a shimmering world of transcendent ideas”…”From that time forward I felt personally responsible, not just for my own actions, but for the very fate of the earth. I really thought it was up to me, a little kid, to save the world, and I had to do it by figuring out how societies and governments and the human psyche work. (LOL!!) By the sixth or seventh grade I had begun reading the New York Times every day and imagining myself President. It’s been quite a burden, I can tell you…”
Enid Bloch--professional photographer
(yes, I can imagine it has! For you and little Gweggy, both)!
And here she diagnoses herself…(AND YOU)! Accurately but apparently fails to derive the necessary conclusions or help from her lay person’s unqualified diagnosis!!
“But I also have spent much of my life struggling against these very same tendencies. That’s probably why I so detested Socrates when I first met him. We are always most angry at those people who openly display the very behaviour or desires we secretly are trying to suppress in ourselves. I hated Socrates’ need for aggressive argument, no doubt because I disdained the same need in myself.”
Enid Bloch--professional photographer
“Boys in Athens seem to have been quite vulnerable to sexual attack. Laws were passed to try to protect them”
Enid Bloch--professional photographer
LOL! All societies have laws to protect kids from sexual attack. Why should the society most concerned with examining morality and addressing what is good and best be different than ours in their concern for children? DUH!
To book photography sessions with Enid Bloch or explore the spirituality or sexuality of ancient Greeks you may go through her web site. She can tell you all about it! 30 years of professional photography has apparently helped her work out many of her childhood issues!
Have you thought of taking up photography, Gweggy?! It might help you to draw back from 24 hours a day obsessing over who had sex with whom in ancient Greece! ;-) |
