Could you possibly have a 'precold'? Company's advertisements have introduced a new word

If you’ve watched television recently, chances are you’ve seen the commercials for Zicam cautioning that certain symptoms might mean you’ve got a “precold.”

Having never heard the term before — but certainly having experienced the vaguely unwell feeling that may or may not be the precursor to an illness — we turned to the thoroughly modern medical miracle of the Internet to do a little data triage.

Zicam defines it as “that first sniffle, sneeze or cough ... that throat tickle, ache or unexplained tiredness ... the ‘uh-oh’ stage before you get a full-blown monster of a cold.” We kept digging.

Through an Arizona law firm, Zicam, LLC of Scottsdale, Ariz., applied for a trademark on the term “precold” on April 26.

Zicam lists its active ingredients as zinc gluconate and zinc acetate.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the common cold is caused by any one of more than 100 viruses that infect the respiratory tract.

The Mayo Clinic site makes no mention of a “precold” or what that might entail.

So the lesson here? Be cautious. This could be an instance where you shouldn’t believe everything you hear.
