Internet’s new copy culture will almost certainly increase literacy and the spread of democratic ideals, furthering the legacy of the printing press.
in 2003, we were in Cambodia, I was surrounded with kids thrusting their wares at me, shouting "you buy, you buy!".....
once i got away from them a bit, this beautiful little girl said, "excuse me sir, I have many hand made gifts, are you interested in any of them?"....my head snapped around, her english was perfect. I said let's go talk, we got away from the other kids where I could ask her how was her english so good, she said she just learned it by listening...then she said "I speak french, and german, too"...and she did.
I asked her if she went to school, she said she loved school, but her family couldn't afford to send her. I told her she had a gift of intelligence that she needed to take advantage of, it could take her anywhere she wanted to go. I gave her some money for school and told her to keep it to herself. She thanked me, then asked for my email address! I said, "you have email?" she said, no, but someday she would and she would contact me....
I'm still waiting.. |
