One option for a "hard" start date would be to run the contest for a year from a date that doesn't fall within the year end holiday festivities and vacations. e.g. From Jan 15th to Jan 14th of the following year. Alternatively, from Dec 15th to Dec14th might appeal to tax/charity considerations. Dec 1st to Nov 30th should probably not create too many conflicts and is far enough away from major holiday/vacation times.

Just a thought.
