Letter: Jefferson's views on gun control To the editor Published 8:25 pm, Thursday, January 3, 2013

The gun debate has many claiming greater understanding of our Constitution and the intent of our Founding Fathers.

Perhaps this will help. Quoting Cesare Beccaria's "Essay on Crimes and Punishments," Thomas Jefferson wrote in his legal commonplace book: "Laws that forbid the carrying of arms ... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed one."
