Re Countries can no longer afford their culture. It may be the other way around. The American culture cannot afford America and the Japanese culture cannot afford Japan.They go looking for pawn shops. Something is pawned off on the slower cultures with the promise that your life will be better if we all speak and dress the same way and all become Walmart customers. That something invariably involves technology and money. When Europe fell upon the native Americans all was lost for the natives. That is always the way when a stout, foreign man with more powerful technology shows up on your doorstep. The natives are confused, humbled, split, exploited ... and the rest is history. What would happen to the world, I wonder, if there is sudden disclosure about extraterrestrials and long-term (say past 50 years) contact with select operatives in Governments? Treat it as a hypothetical question. We have inferior (to put it mildly, if it has been 50 years) technology. We wake up to the reality that we have been hoodwinked by Govts. (if you find it unimaginable, remember to treat it as hypothesis). That means we don't really know how much of our technology really came from our own smarts and how much was "seeded" by some process that leaked ideas to us. Let your imagination run wild ...... perhaps we are told that we have a few dozen top-secret secret US spaceships. :) That means technology leaked in. Think about nano, bio, materials. How much was leaked in, maybe in a controlled way? There would be so many societal effects. What would happen to the markets? Who could anyone trust anymore? What happens to commerce and to international treaties? Will Walmart try to go extra-global? What becomes of all our cultures? :)
