Assuming that total handset sales were flat at approximately 11 million (likely conservative) so that would mean that smartphones sales were up from 7.7 million to 9.35 million.

Thanks, here's another interesting data point: LTE moving from 16% to 23% of the subscriber base means a net gain of 7.18 million LTE users. I find that hard to reconcile that number with your calculation of 9.35M smartphones, since the number of 3G smartphones should not be so high.
