I've often found it odd that Apple never "iPod-ed" the iPhone.

But I think it's been discussed here before - it was thought that Apple would wait until all the upper market dollars were in the fold before addressing a different market segment.

The primary carrier rollouts worldwide seem to be nearing saturation, and the iPhone 5 will have some of the biggest numbers yet.

Creating a diminuitive would expand the product line with a lesser-featured phone at a different price point without appearing too reactive - ie: part of Apple's standard game plan, just like the iPod.

And let's not forget the cute factor - perhaps that's where the "colors" rumor is coming from.
